What we do

The Edmonton Bicycle Commuters’ Society (EBC), a non-profit society formed in 1980, is a leader in the Edmonton cycling community. We support people using bicycles as everyday urban travel.

We sell used bikes, accept donated bikes, and run bike repair and riding courses. We also operate a volunteer-run community bike workshop where you can drop in and learn how to fix your bike. For more info, including workshop hours, read our FAQ.

Hour 19 of the Repair-a-thon

at 6:51 am posted by Chris C

There are still a couple people in the shop here with Keith and me.  There have been bikes on the stands non-stop since we started (and I’m not counting mechanic bikes).

It’s not over yet, but you can already read about us in the Edmonton Journal.

By the by, our mechanic Jeremy has volunteered to keep the shop open until 5pm today, so we’ll be having our regular hours as well for June 10.  That’ll put us up to a healthy 29 hours of bike fixing.

Rich Aucoin/The Grinch Who Cycled Across Canada (and stopped in at BikeWorks)

at 4:40 am posted by Chris C

Come join us for a bike salon at BikeWorks (10047 80 Ave, back alley entrance), Saturday, June 9, 2pm to 4pm, to have a chat with Rich Aucoin (http://www.myspace.com/richaucoin).  The topic is “Cycling With Purpose”.

Rich is a commuter cyclist who is doing his first touring ride across Canada to, simultaneously raise money for cancer research (for The Childhood Cancer Foundation) and
promote his new album, Personal Publication EP. And he’s doing it in a Grinch costume with his instruments in tow behind.

June is Bike Month!

at 12:01 am posted by Chris C

It’s June!  Check out all of the events that are happening this month as part of Bike Month.  Mocktails on the High Level, pancake breakfast in Churchill Square, a ride-in movie in Victoria Park, free movies at the Metro and more—check out the Bike Month calendar for all the events and details!  (!!! More exclaimation marks, because it occurs to me that I use them too much!)

Bicycles, seven days a week!

at 12:52 pm posted by Chris C

So it’s almost June, and you finally brought your dusty bike out of the garage. The chain has fused into a pile of rust, someone stole your seat, the front wheel wobbles, the shifters don’t work, the rear brakes barely work, and the handlebars are crooked.  And you don’t know what to do.  Come to BikeWorks and we’ll teach you how to fix that bicycle, giving you valuable mechanic experience, saving you money, and building a stronger community!

Starting June 1, we’ll be open the following hours:

Monday: 12:30-9:00 pm
Tuesday: 12:30-5:30 pm
Wednesday: 12:30-9:00 pm
Thursday: 12:30-5:30 pm
Friday: 12:30-5:30 pm
Saturday: 12:00-5:00 pm
Sunday: 12:00-5:00 pm

You can always find our shop hours in the top-right of the webpage.  Note that because of the 24 Hour Repair-a-thon, we’ll be closed June 10 from noon-5, though we’re open from June 9 at noon until June 10 at noon. (If we can find a mechanic that isn’t exhausted, we might open up regular hours that Sunday, but for now you can assume that we’re closed for the afternoon of June 10.)

Moving the World

at 12:20 am posted by Chris C

Looking to move 10 foot bike racks without using a car? Or maybe just boxes of clothing and books when you move? Things that won’t fit in a car, like lumber, mattresses, or couches? Maybe you’re going touring, or maybe you just need to pick up a big load of groceries? Why not rent one of our bike trailers?  You can move up to 300 lbs with one of these!

EBC now has two 5’ cargo trailers, one 8’ cargo trailer, and two BOB trailers. Members can rent them for $10/day or $2/hour. Click on “continue reading” to get more info.

Spring Hours

at 12:20 am posted by Chris C

We’re extending BikeWorks hours for the spring!  So if you’ve had your bike stuffed in your garage all winter, now you can get it back out on the road in tip-top condition. And if you’ve been riding it all winter, then you probably need to re-pack your bottom bracket, overhaul the hubs, replace the chain, clean the derailleur, and scrub some dirt off the frame….

Check out our new hours in the top-right of the page. And if you’d like to volunteer during any of these hours (whether you have mechanic experience or not), please .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or just drop-in and introduce yourself to one of our friendly mechanics. We can always use extra help around the shop!
